i think 'free thinking' is an oxymoron in that it suggests that one should not make a determination of their belief based on the preconstructed definitions of others, and encourages people to come up with their own conclusions free from the admonitions and teachings of others. on the subject, William Kingdon Clifford says: "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence."...what then can thinking do to generate evidence? i guess the answer is 'nothing'...trying to conjur up some sort of evidence of 'god' through thought is a long journey down an endless road. the problem between atheists and theists is that one demands evidence, and the other cannot provide it. attempting to provide proof of 'god' is similar to trying to prove that one has been in love. 'god' is not a physical entity that can be placed on the lab table for dissection, and showing proof of such impossible. meditation or spirit-polishing MAY lead to some levels of 'god'-knowledge, on the other hand, it may not.
