A related issue is, of course, what we use the oil for. Given the
finite nature of crude oil (no matter how many new sources are found)
and the vast array of uses for petrochemical products (our modern
societies would collapse without plastics) it strikes me (apart from
the whole CO2-global warming issue) that the craziest and most
wasteful thing we can do with the stuff is just burn it. We need a lot
more work on alternative energy sources.
