Victorian England-tragic fate and doom! Hardy is a wonderful
writer! :-) Also a poet. I loved the novel- my daughter despised it.
Have to finish "Jude the Obscure" one of these days. Also liked "Far
>From the Madding Crowd". (I dub it maddening) Tess and Far have been
made into movies you might like.// The social classes, the empire, the
industrialization, rigid moral codes, loss of Nature and village life-
all play their part with Hardy. I believe Tess was considered
"spoiled".
