Thanks for this, orn. In forwarding the link to my brother, I wrote
that Chomsky at 80 is as incisive, provocative, thoughtful and
inspiring as ever. And he even made a joke!

I think much of what he's saying dovetails neatly with much of what
Neil posts here. Despair can loom when we start to think about the
stranglehold vested interests hold on our current, frequently crazy
ways of doing things - especially when one knows that the technology
and resources are already available to do things better. But the
eilites are both powerful and canny and very good at nipping any
serious threats to their positions in the bud. Still, opportunity
often knocks in unexpected ways, the probability of which can only be
seen with hindsight. I think of eastern Europe 1989, for example. Who
knows what could result from a growing realisation of the consequences
of what Chomsky (and others) call "the democratic deficit"?
