Something deep is afoot Don. My guess is that we have the technology to create a safe and generally free world (though this would come with restrictions) or to blow ourselves to shit and let the survivors start again (which seems, in part, evolution's remedy). I'm old enough to only prefer the former on philosophical grounds. I've generally had enough! The deep politics of Western foreign policies (Peter Dale Scott again - but there are many others) need to be seen along with the real facts of domination elsewhere in the world. I'm sure Vam would confirm there is plenty of "domination fantasy" in the so-called 'developing nations'. In the end, I want to see men and women free and free of each other's lack of compassion and charity. The extent to which we have glimpsed this in the West is overdone, and has relied on vile exploitation abroad, perhaps coming back full-circle now with unemployment and a de- skilling of our own populations. Again my guess is that we now have technology for genuinely participative democracy and for a combination of local-global productivity that won't kill the planet in a manner similar to that in which bacteria poison themselves by over- population. Rules have to come with this dream - on family size and pollution as well as a general rule of law. This is something I'd fight and kill for (easy to say when one is too old for the draft!)
An area about the size of Austria in the Sahara could provide solar power for the entire world. This isn't a castle-in-the-air. Politically we have trouble stopping women being slung in gaol for not liking their husbands and can't get any sensible answers to why we are in Iraq and Afghanistan - or Columbia, Indonesia (where the UK fought a 'secret' war for many years from 1960 to 1975) and all over. World Government is the answer, but this would be hopeless done through representative politics as all politicians are bent and we'd all die in a golden grease flood. History tells us that we are reluctant to see neighbours improve their lot for fear they will become more powerful than us and actually try to suppress this. Maybe the answer is to bomb them all back to the stone age - Bush did threaten Pakistan with this. Someone will be arguing even now that we should do this before they really have the ability to respond.
