This practice or actual case started in 2007 and Cairo Egypt is not some back water area, and it is in a main line deeply religious Muslim family. I have always had it is one of those dirty little secrets that are more dominant than religious people want to admit to, that applies to all religions as they are always trying to put the best foot forward, that is understandable but to me not acceptable.
