"We" have never had the "ability to reconcile in the world" because "we" are not in control. We elect government officials who seem to have their morals automatically extracated within months of attaining their position of "control". The peaceful citizens of the world would probably attempt to do things differently, but at what cost? If one goes about "treating your enemy as your brother" or whatever the Bible admonishes, we would most likely be run over by a hoard of abusing thugs who wants what we consider ours, and no amount of niceties will convince them otherwise.
If good ever overcomes evil (maybe by slipping a love drug into communal water supplies), the world would soon be over populated, and the cycle of death would reinvent itself. This may be a pessimistic outlook, but to me its just the way it is and there seems to be nothing much we can do to change it. I'd like to think that I am doing my small share of spreading love and acceptance, but these words often fall of deaf ears, drummed out by the incroachment of modern day stress.
