The disparity may be in the way that you heard what the athlete had to
say.  Maybe he was thanking that part of himself that is god - his
higher self - for expressing the energy and spirit necessary to excel
or "win" because the attitudes of appreciation and gratitude bring
more possibility of success to the heart of a winner.  An expression
like this is a victory for all of us.
