Here I was attempting to make some allowance for the context, in the
last few days' terrible news, in order to partially explain and excuse
his response.

I thought it was clear that my excuse for SD's response was that IF I
had been referring to Haiti (which of course I wasn't), then MY post
(the OP of this thread) would have been "almost the height of bad
taste".

Perhaps the sentence structure was too complex or awkward.  I have
frequently, and justly, been accused of clumsy and verbose writing, to
the point of unreadability, although I can't really see it in this
case.
