Catharsis? The first adult novel I remember reading was "Forever Amber"! I do think literature provides cautionary tales like myth and drama-stage or film- as well as a broader awareness of character and consequences. But beyond the didactic, literature provides pleasure to the imagination and admiration for organization of plot- as if we could manage our own plots in such a manner! (Fat chance!) With all my reading, I find some novels have sunk to a brain swamp. I have reread serious lierature and consider them quite differently as an adult with life experience versus a student plodding away for a degree. I also have grown fond of history.// Hint for seniors- beware of cheap drug store reader glasses as they can exacerbate eye troubles.
