British politics has been dire since the mid-70s and everyone threw in the towel on alternatives to letting the banks run the country. I'm not sure why this happened, though it became obvious around then that the Soviets and Chinese had been running vile forms of state capitalism under cruel tyranny around then and skills were becoming ever more machine embodied and transplantable to wherever operating costs were cheapest. We have had no real politics in Britain since. Each election has been about "change", though none has really been offered and certainly none achieved, other than the breaking up of social solidarity and massive immigration. Now we have "real change" on the scene. Nick Clegg is young, pretty and has an even prettier partner (the very lovely Miriam). He's a public schoolboy and looks every inch the same as what has gone before, without being tarnished by being a member of either of our usual ruling parties. All he's done is stand up in one debate and look so very much better than the two absolute turd-marionettes put up by our main parties. I intended to vote Liberal Democrat long before this election run in, simply because the other parties both now have such a severe and vile record of sleaze. I'm worried this is a millennial moment.
One poll now shows the Liberals on 35%, Tories on 33 and Nulabour on 28. This would still leave the Liberals with less than half the number of seats of both the other parties, exposing the farcical nature of our electoral system. With luck we will all throw our votes in the air and give them a massive majority to bring in a new system we can actually vote for after fair debate. Most millennial moments, as Obama watchers will know, are full of hot air that fades away. Maybe Clegg is one last hope for this sad country? Nulabour are evil now and nothing at all to do with the old Labour Party - it's as though the stoats and weasels have taken it over (maybe the CIA did?). The Tories are now Blue Socialists promising a "Big Society" with little government. They will be saying that 'the State will wither away' soon! Everyone except the Liberals is offering "no change to services" as they mutter about leading massive change and pretend they can mend the budget without raising taxes and still give their friends loads a dosh. Soon the Liberals will be accused of being queer, pansies, unBritish and about to sell us out to Islam by abandoning our nuclear deterrent (the one we rent from the US - who keep failing to send us the key) and leaving Afghanistan. One can only hope the spin will not only fail, but also turn more of us against its use and the crass main parties.
