Understanding while disagreeing is still far better than disagreeing without the understanding. And it is the latter that I think is the basis for many of today's problems--the Israeli/Palestinian situation for example. If both sides truly knew how the others felt, it would be far more difficult to launch another attack, either direction. It can be 'lip service' when someone says, "I feel your pain" but, if they truly did, it would be far more unthinkable to make them feel even more pain. With empathy, both sides would feel more obliged to work towards a solution that both COULD agree to. And THAT'S why I think empathy is the key. > Hope, trust, and will may be removed over a long time or suddenly and > community ought to provide the safety net. So logically the next > question we could ask is, what can we do to promote this community > (communities) within our society? > Well, that's it. Only with global empathy will humanity ever GET to a stage of global community. Right now, we have nations. And we humans love to point out the differences between us rather than see how outweighed they are by the similarities. How to promote empathy/ community to the world? Well, it'll be a part of my book, as my overall "Theory of Everything" would have a huge gaping hole without it. But, of course, the concept has to be put into practice. And THAT'S the big stumbling block, as there are people out there who are quite happy to continue hating. And THAT is one thing we MUST get past or we will self-destruct as a species. We, as a species, need to grow up and realise that we really are ALL in this (world) together. So why not try to make the best of it. There's a line in the Qur'an that says that God created mankind "so that we may know one another". If that's true, then it must also be true that we should endeavour to understand one another, as that's part and parcel of knowing one another. > +1 for empathy > > On 4/26/2010 7:54 AM, Pat wrote: > > > > > > > > > On 24 Apr, 01:41, kenny<[email protected]> wrote: > > >> our personal lives or our cultural lives (our society) i try and think > >> what brings culture into our society today. could we call t.v our > >> culture. nice material things? we show those off for sure. big t.v's n > >> nice expensive cars, clothes, looks, etc... what else can we be proud > >> of though, other than things that will fade. maybe friends. though > >> friends are not a part of culture, but life. so where does that take > >> it... we sing songs of love, but could we call that part of the > >> american trophy box. and what would you add to our culture if you > >> could have everyone accept it as much a Christmas (or similar holiday)? > > > What would I add: that all humans (you did say 'our' culture, so I'm > > excluding, for the sake of your question, any other species--but ONLY > > for the sake of they way you worded the question) empathise with one > > another as best they can. > > >> -- > >> You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > >> ""Minds Eye"" group. > >> To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > >> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > >> [email protected]. > >> For more options, visit this group > >> athttp://groups.google.com/group/minds-eye?hl=en. > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > ""Minds Eye"" group. > To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > [email protected]. > For more options, visit this group > athttp://groups.google.com/group/minds-eye?hl=en.- Hide quoted text - > > - Show quoted text - -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups ""Minds Eye"" group.
