I thought this piece from the Wikibook /Communication Theory/ was interesting.

"Techniques have taught the organizers how to force him into the game... The intensive use of propaganda destroys the citizen's faculty of discernment"

"The more stereotypes in a culture, the easier it is to form public opinion, and the more an individual participates in that culture, the more susceptible he becomes to the manipulation of these symbols" (p. 111).

Both Ellul and Lippmann recognize the inability of the public to form educated opinions as a whole. However, while Lippmann chose to focus on the idea that we should accept the fact that it is truly an educated elite that is controlling our opinions, Ellul chose to focus on the fact that the public actually has a need for propaganda. Ellul contests the idea that the public is merely a victim of propaganda. Rather, he states that, "The propagandee is by no means just an innocent victim. He provokes the psychological action of propaganda, and not merely lends himself to it, but even derives satisfaction from it. Without this previous, implicit consent, without this need for propaganda experienced by practically every citizen of the technological age, propaganda could not spread" (Ellul,
1965, p. 121)."

Been watching the news this morning,,

For some reason I am reminded of a magician with all the smoke and mirrors.I get the feeling these politicians and businessmen think I am dumb (I can only speak for my self).. I see the oil spill and I see al the finger pointing at Obama now if my memory is correct that was at least set up during the Bush era and they handled all the permits that means that it was actually approved by the republican parties policies not those of Obama.

This is a classic trick to distract attention from where the real action or this case fault lies.. Over here they are required to put on special equipment to prevent this type of accidents.. this is a direct result of the Regan Bush & Bush era. where the dance of the golden calf really took hold. You see wall street and Banks where they have to pay huge bonuses to keep the best of the best.. Yes the best of the best are the very people whose superb skills brought on the recession in the first place.

These problems and other major ones I feel if you clear away the smoke and mirrors it is the result of top politicians and political leaders of the world and in many many cases is is the result of their direct desire to enter into the dance of the golden calf..

Heh, the smartest thing I said all day. I heard recently that the
ethics problems we are seeing today is due to an imbalance of
power influenced by the Vietnam draft. Perhaps even a little
    hawkish overcompensation.

Skirts, children, Hoover's military-industrial complex, terrorists
protected by international trade secrets, and children with
    AK-47s. Oy!

I don't think the open science model will compete with the
corporate/military influences over universities let alone brute
force patent methods. Then there's always the national security
card, your lab just got confiscated or penalized into
nonexistence. Girls' toys sound more interesting.

            moment. My
view is conditioned by the bleak failure to realise we
            have to change
the idiot social-economic monsters that screw us to be
            able to take

            Frankenstein and a
bunch of men who like to pose about in skirts and who make
            us very
wary if they show interest in our children. I don't buy
            Gabb's boys'

Not sure,, but it does seem those the Golden Boys

last recession have not stopped dancing.. the cure
                for recession according
to them is more greed. Oddly enough this actually
                started when Regan was
president. and the poor economic policies he created..
                 the last depression
in the US well it ended when people started caring
                about people..

The US (and Yes I am American) unforunately has run
                up its national debt
due to the weasels Bush's desire to be a great
                American War time president.
Now the national debt is so large it can no longe
                build its way out of
recession like it did last time.. This time they used
                the golden calf dance
policy and tried buying their way out.

Until politicians learn sound economic policies like
                not spending more than
you bring in , Actually working for the best interest
                of the people and not
serving the interest of the Golden Calf worshipers.

This could easily turn into a rant of which I really
                know very little..
