Lots of things are farfetched: Catholic indugences, lottery tickets,
devining the future by casting entrails (ancient Rome), etc. I think
it's an amusement and very small in my world but I did a tarot reading
once and it was spot on. Also have had luck once or twice with I
Ching. Perhaps all are farfetched and merely provide a dose of
escapism or redirection of thoughts. A couple friends are into crystal
readings (by an ex-nun!) and runes now that I think of it. All this
was forbidden in the old Catholic Church along with the Index of
forbidden books and never going into strange churches, synagogues,
mosques, etc. or marrying anyone who was not Catholic. Even today,
conservative rabbis and priests will not perform intermarriage
services.
