You've posited a great idea. Distill your own ethanol at home ... it's legal as long as it's not for human consumption. Adding it to your gas tank in a ratio of 1 part ethanol to 10 parts gasoline (1 gallon for each 10 gallons of gas) would extend your mileage and cost per mile substantially.
Were I sufficiently heeled, I'd buy a nice Mercedes diesel and process my own biofuel. You can buy used restaurant grease for about 50 cents a gallon and a 55 gallon drum of the stuff would produce a filtered usable biofuel of about 40 gallons. That's about $0.69 per gallon for fuel.
