That is an excellent tactic, Allan, as we so often forget those sparks of insight or observation that occur. I admire Bonnard's paintings and, as I recall, many of his primliminary sketches were in small tablets or small pieces of paper- more or less to establish form- though his glory is as a colorist. And a poet carried about a small notebook- maybe 4x6- to stash images. Sometimes, if one is working a traditional form- like a sonnet- it is helpful to pare down the paper size to match- sort of like a girdle! :-) I wonder at the influence of technology. I like the flow of thought from brain to the hand- or wherever. Will writing and sketching and composing go the way of the chisel? And think of the memory of the bards who thought of the brain as having many rooms to store their epics! Will technology weaken memory as our other senses have been weakened over time? A neighbor keeps telling me I should write down my "quips". Why?
