Babies exit the womb as perfect tyrants! Yes- we condition them with tenderness and reliability. They have home values and social/peer values and adapt accordingly. Logical consequences is a powerful learning mechanism but parents should not put their children at risk, if possible. The innocence of children is primarily their honesty before they learn how to lie gracefully and their reactions- such as tantrums, etc. I do trace heredity as a factor in my family and see it in the personality as well as little ticks, for instance my youngest son never really knew his father yet has a similar chuckle and facial expressions. I was lucky to have Dr. Spock and Gessell& Ilg (sp?) to help me with parenting as I was completely unprepared by home, school or observation. Street smarts can turn cynical or criminal. Yes- children often compensate in reverse of their parents. It really takes a lifetime for some kind of calm acceptance to settle in your head about family history. I've had a very interesting life as a child and as an adult- maybe that's what its all about?
