My favourite bible quote is: There is no rest for the wicked. That is the
kind of knowledge that I can identify with. I can see that in you too, how
you don't stop fighting for what you think is right.

As for our cave origin - in our German word for 'hell', "Hölle", we still
hear the "Höhle", which means 'cave'. So the bible explanation and and your
native american friend's explanation do not contradict in my ears. Hell
(cave) is where we are coming from, sky (Heaven, Himmel) is where we are
going to. Go to hell means start again. I find that a really simple rule of
thumb to get the orientation right.

I don't know the hanging context you speak of, but it reminds me of the
tarot card, the one before the death card. It resembles the headstand in
yoga philosophy.  - Not too bad a recommendation to do likewise.
