Hello,
I have this old computer, and i kept using openbsd snapshots on up to
a point in time when booting and installing in UEFI mode gave me
problems. I retired it, but now i have to use it again and doing some
experiments i collected some data about what is happening, just in
case someone can figure out what is the real problem.
Phase 1
- booting UEFI (Legacy disabled)
- installing GPT mode
- the installer stop right after the line:
Making all devices nodes ... done.
< Freeze, i need to manually reboot from the power button
- booting after install gets me a message: No option to boot to.
- entering BIOS i can see the entry on UEFI like INTEL SSDXXXX - my
installed disk
- disabling UEFI and enabling Legacy
- booting in Legacy mode gets me the message: GPT-formatted disk /
Legacy boot not supported
Phase 2
- booting UEFI (Legacy disabled)
- installing MBR mode
- everything runs fine
- i get a message like /dev/efi Not configured
- booting after install gets me a message: No option to boot to.
- disabling UEFI and enabling Legacy
- booting in Legacy mode works fine
Phase 3
- booting Legacy (UEFI disabled)
- installing MBR mode
- all install is fine
- booting after install works fine
Phase 4
- booting Legacy (UEFI disabled)
- installing GPT mode
- all install is fine
- booting after install enables UEFI mode and boots fine
My puzzling is the following: I understand UEFI may be broken on my
computer, so Phase 1&2 may be related to possible UEFI bugs. Phase 3
works because it is Legacy boot and MBR.
But what can be the explanation for Phase 4?
Phase 4 starts in Legacy with UEFI disabled, GPT mode for the disk and
still is able to switch to UEFI and boot, contrary to Phase 1. The
only difference is the initial boot for install.
I did in the past some snapshots (from ftp.hostserver.de/archive)
installs based on bisect method like Stuart Henderson told me to. I
was able to reach the following point:
