I was trying to move this system to -stable from -release (both 3.7 - of course). So, I consulted http://www.openbsd.org/stable.html and - because of that - http://www.openbsd.org/anoncvs.html. I grabbed src.tar.gz and sys.tar.gz from muk.kd85.com and then untar'ed them both (tar xzf) - with no problems.
The problem started when I tried to use cvs to checkout the -stable tree. It failed with 'Abort Trap'. The same occured with pretty much every program I tried. Ok, I thought - I must have overwritten something important, odd because I thought /usr/src was just for src - but ook. So, I booted from an OpenBSD floppy and looked around - tried re-downloading and re-extracting to no avail (didn't really expect it to work, but I suppose it could have been corrupted and couldn't find any checksums.) I can't compile anything, I can't use lynx, I can use ftp and chroot. So, any ideas? I've read and re-re-re-read the documentation and can't see it saying anything about "MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DO blah blah blah or your system will die." Could it be just a coincidence? I had em1 fail on me with the kernel yesterday, and it hasn't been detected since - but was by both the OpenBSD floppy and the Knoppix CD I'm using (only thing I had to hand). And I didn't notice any problems either. And why would some programs CONSISTENLY fail and others work consistently? So I guess that rules out hardware. Thanks for any suggestions you can come up with -- Adam Gleave [ OpenBSD 3.7 (GENERIC) #50: Sun Mar 20 00:01:57 MST 2005 ]
