Yep - that was it. /usr/local remained intact throughout the process
(phew) - so just made a copy of that, newfs'ed /usr and just did it
all again from the sets. Slightly time consuming but at least it will
teach me to be more careful with tar archives (I have to admit I
thought tar wouldn't overwrite without warning - wrong!).

Agreed with some others about inconsistent tar'ing.
