At the risk of sounding discourteous, you should get yourself a proper test environment. That way you can leave your production equipment alone. Fortunately, getting an indication of what trying out -current would bring you may be as simple as booting bsd.rd. These kernels come with the snapshots on the FTP servers. It will not be as good as a complete test install; but it may just be worth your while. Seeing your USB-related problem, how about picking a quiet hour to do your tests in and give -current a shot. You mention the machine freezes upon plugging in the drive. As far as I know, umass(4) is present in the RAMDISK_CD kernel, so you can try it out and take it from there. That said, there are plenty of people who run -current in production circumstances. Sometimes it just fixes problems that haven't made it -- or will never make it -- into -stable. Cheers, Rogier -- If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there.
