Exim has a bad reputaion and also blocks unnecessary things like mx ips even though they are accepted in RFCs. Almost as bad as some of Ciscos pointless and dumb blocking ideas. I'd look at the mentioned sendmail solution, postfix or qmail (fehcom.de provides a rather complete patch for qmail, though you may want to add spf and/or DKIM etc.) Kc
