Sorry Nick, I lost the record I made, of what I tried and what happened. I will gather this information again and provide it tomorrow, including firmware versions, dmesg, fdisk and disklabel outputs, mount error and fsck error message. One thing is certain - fsck complained of bad magic number and couldn't find a superblock, with both the SAS and SATA controller.
