I'm never sure. And neither should be anyone these days. Let me rephrase: I've never noticed any machine not doing what it was supposed to be doing. But, if I got a machine hacked it wasn't by bruteforcing ssh. Unless there is some bug that we don't know about yet. Of course I use mitigation techniques. That is not to say that I've always used them.
