I think these issues are being addressed. In -current, tedu's
work to lower contention by adding lock/unlocks to critical paths
in the kernel has made a huge difference for me. I even backported
much of it to older kernels on machines that I don't plan on upgrading
past time_t (will just replace them instead). It was that impressive.

I think other people are seeing serious improvements in video
playback, too. Such as:
