protection, they're so you can keep operating in face of (some types of)
hardware failure.

Not unless you have a very narrow definition of 'data protection'. RAID won't protect you against bad software corrupting your files, or accidental 'rm -rf'

A single copy of your files is not a "backup" no matter what definition of the word you're using.
