Thanks Jeremie! That was this second point. I was doing 'M-x gdb' from the Emacs source directory which consequently loads the .gdbinit here. Calling the same command from a different directory and now the Emacs subprocess is normally fast and usable. This bundled .gdbinit defines lots of useful commands but I could select some only.
