one of these days my ed knowledge is going to stick. When I need to recover a broken system I sometimes boot bsd.rd. It doesn't have vim or anything like that but it does have ed. Last time I used this I had to edit my fstab. I forget how to use ed so quickly. How do you recover your systems?
Booting bsd.rd, you can, after creating the various sd* entries in /dev, mount ,after fsck, / and /usr and then chroot into /mnt. set TERM=vt100 and you can use vi. If you want vim you need to mount /usr/local too.
This way you don't need to remember ed anymore... Cheers, Noth
