                        synchronously.  By default, only metadata is
                        read/written synchronously.

If you add sync to the flags for /usr/local in /etc/fstab and possibly /var for
the pkg database then fsck is far less likely to run into any issues on those
mounted filesystems but it will have a significant performance impact on writes.
