How to kill a monitor. (One case where software can destory hardware.)
Set video card to a high resolution (say like 1280x1024)
(there's also a vertical refresh component which matters)
If the monitor is not smart enough to drop out, the monitor will
self-destruct.
Some video cards interrogate the monitor to see what the monitor supports
and restrict their operation to something that will not kill the monitor.
Likely that drivers will also attempt similar version of sanity.
