I should probably know, but I don't. You may want to look at
/var/www/logs/error_log, though. That should at least verify that your
configuration works, and is likely to contain a helpful error message.
Also, I am not sure if you ever explicitly stated that this works
without authentication? If that is the case, you may have a permission
issues. (Note that Apache runs as www, and has its own permission system
on top of that - see Allow and Deny.)
