No, it doesn't mean that the device does not support it but that the
driver might. You are not specifying which version of WPA you are
using.

I am guessing you did download the appropriate firmware version
following the documentation:
http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=ipw&sektion=4

According to the pages, it does support WPA without a hitch. Double
check your logs, and pay attention to any messages related to your
controller, might be something earlier on the boot telling you if the
firmware does not load right or something.

I'll try out tomorrow on my 2200 controller (laptop).
