There are many possible problems. If your primary MX's network goes down while you are away on 3 weeks holiday, the backup MX can spool mail until you return from holiday to have the ISP fix the wiring, etc. which might take a few days... Or if the primary MX has a failure on Friday evening, and you can't order parts until Monday, which take a week to arrive.... Some shit takes more than 4 days to fix.
