Herein is a letter to the editor of the "Cincinnati Enquirer from Dec.
20. You will notice that the author is probably eighteen years of age.
This says alot about either his parents influence or the fact that his
education was provided by a rare high school. Hopefully, he isn't an
island in the storm. -K-

Growth of government putting us in chains
Your Voice: Brett Milam

I often wonder to myself if people care about freedom anymore. Do people
actually sit down and ruminate over the vastness of freedom? I don't
believe so.
Naturally, humans aren't meant to be free.
For centuries, we lived in chains and were led. Freedom became a
relatively new concept in civilization. However, I notice many take
freedom for granted with the usurpation of power by government.
Critical thinking about the motives of government has been replaced by
complacency. It has become commonplace to accept government the way it
is: Taxes will always be high, wars are inevitable, and debt is out of
control. Americans have either detached themselves from the encroaching
behavior of government or they welcome such activities.

The latter want to model America after the rest of the world. This
direction I immensely fear. This path is laced with good intentions
perhaps, but it leads to big government; which is a simple euphemism for
hell.

Fringe buzzwords in mainstream political discourse are: limited
government, maximum freedom and sound money. Capitalism and free markets
have become the scapegoats for big government proponents.

We are progressing down a dangerous slippery slope; one in which will be
insurmountable in stopping the descent.
Democracy transitions through eight stages: from bondage to spiritual
faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from
complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back
into bondage.

The chains we shed not long ago are slowly creeping back on us through
the incremental growth of government worldwide over the last century.
And we are willing prisoners; prisoners willing to bear the chains so
that we can live in paradise. Well I tell you this: Paradise in chains
is no paradise at all.
