what should the rendering behaviour be for an image containing NaN?

As far as I understand, int types cannot store NaN, so this pertains to float 
images only?
Also presumably, this conversation also can't pertain to binary masks, as all 
binary masks in MITK must be in an unsigned char containing only 2 values. So, 
a float image containing NaN for invalid, 0 for background and 1 for foreground 
is valid as an image but not as a mask.
