Hi Urban,
you probably open the MITK-superproject solution - it indeed doesn't
contain the source files. Once you have build the superproject (meaning
MITK and its external dependencies) you can open the MITK solution which
you can find in your {superproject_build_directory}/MITK-build. You will
also find the .bat files for starting your IDE with correct PATH
variable setup (e.g. StartVS_debug.bat). Opening the MITK solution will
have the source files in the solution explorer. Express edition has
nothing to do with this.
