I think its been established that there's a problem with PortAudio.
The alternative (RtAudio) has a somewhat better solution (it opens all
ports in the range banded by the greatest and smallest sockets) but it
seems at least plausible that this whole issue is due to the
architecture of sound cards.

That's my interpretation of the IRC chatter, anyway. : )

Someone with somewhat more knowledge, authority and clout should
probably pass this on to the PA guys so that they understand its a
pretty big issue. Volunteers?
