IIRC I've had weird issues with this mysterious "default" soundcard in
ALSA as well. It uses dmix or something from what I remember, so I
always thought it was asking for trouble. I don't think PortAudio
handles this properly or something. (I used to be able to get it to
work for like 20 seconds, and then it would crash. Maybe there's some
buffer that's being the wrong size in PortAudio.)
