The change we're talking about in r1412 of PortAudio is this non-mmap patch for the ALSA backend that allows PortAudio to open ALSA "devices" which don't support mmap (eg. PulseAudio devices). Sean's been able to confirm that both the latency-changing hang AND the random callback hangs both occur ONLY with PortAudio >= r1412. In 64 Studio Beta 3, can you check what PortAudio version you were using? The PortAudio version in Jaunty is from December 2007, but if you check the changelog, Luke Yelavich added the non-mmap patch for Jaunty. This explains why people are seeing the random hangs in Jaunty. Now, there's still a handful of us seeing this issue in Intrepid, but I think it's safe to say that it's really only us developers who have compiled PortAudio from SVN ourselves. In other words, the version of PortAudio included with Ubuntu 8.10 is OK and does not hang. Lockups with the non-mmap patch are currently being discussed on the portaudio mailing list. We'll see how it goes, but in the meantime, I'd recommend rolling back that patch.
