I wouldn't recommend trying vinyl control without a preamp. If you
want, you can bump the input gain by using Mixxx's software pre-amp
(available in the Vinyl Control pane of the preferences). Though the
Maya44 doesn't have any input gain controls, this software amplifier
will do its best to amplify the signal. However, depending on your
environment, it can be extremely noisy. Try it out though; you may be
lucky. But remember the environment that you're in can strongly impact
the quality of your signal.

I use a $17 Pyle Pro preamp on one of my turntables (Stanton STR8-60)
and my other (Stanton T.80) has a built-in preamp that I select. Both
work fine; the signal quality is almost excellent.

I have used cheap usb sound cards for vinyl control without a hardware
preamp and they worked. So do you think i still need a hardware preamp with
the Maya44 USB.

Thanks

I have a Maya44 USB and have no problem with the sound inputs out of the

for me, as the input levels are fine. What are you using your card for?
If it's for vinyl control, make sure you have preamps attached as the
Maya44 does not have internal phono-level preamps.

If you're using it as a microphone input, it should work fine. I
haven't tried that though.

Now, the Maya44 has 3 output level controls: master, line 1 and line 2.
I think Line 1 and Line 2 are called "Line" and "Line 1" or something
due to poor ALSA naming.

On my system, ALSA defaults by turning master to 0, which makes things
coming out of the card barely audible. So, you'll need to turn that up
quite a bit. I turn it to full.

The other two control whether you pass audio input from Channels {1,2}
or {3,4} directly to the output (I think it ties them to both Channels
{1,2} and {3,4} of the output, but I haven't tested this). I'm not sure
if this is analog passthrough or if it's digital. Obviously, though,
you want to leave these muted if you use timecoded vinyl, unless
you like treating your audience with annoying high-pitched noises. :P

I've used this card with every Linux Kernel from about 2.6.37 onwards.

Important note: your computer may not be able to handle four channels of
input and four channels of output! This is really weird. I've tried
the card on 4 computers. Two of them were Intel's newer Core system.
On my Core i7 desktop, 4 channels of sound input and 4 channels of sound
output isn't a problem. On a Core i5 Dell desktop, if I tried that
configuration, Mixxx would crash and ALSA would complain about
insufficient bandwidth (check the output of dmesg). On a Core 2 Duo
laptop, I had the same bandwidth issues. But on a slightly newer Core
Solo laptop, all 4 channels worked, but with some occasional skipping.

Crazy, huh?

HTH,
Joe

Hmmm strange. Here we go: nasty debugging style :D

Please post the outputs of the following: (from a terminal)

aplay -L
lsmod | grep snd

Another helpful bit of info would be a screenshot of alsamixer with all
its
controls (hit F5).

Cheers, -Harry
