once when i was studying computing we had a laboratory class where we had to fix computers, the instructor would sometimes mess with the bios settings, install incompatible programs, write bad configurations, put in broken pci cards, etc. but the worst things were the really stupid ones, like unplugging the monitor power cable, taking out the fuse of the power supply.
the moral of the story is: check the simple things first, its almost always something stupid. ewan.
