One thing I've begun to really notice is that large areas of black
show the noise the worst - almost like the game of "Life" moving
across the screen sometimes. Is there any type of filtering that
might help the encoder avoid that effect?

Amen to that! Analog tape formats benefit a _lot_ from the use
of the denoiser. For other sources I've found that using
"yuvmedianfilter -t 6" to be quite effective and not overly instrusive
(leave the radius at '-r 2' unless you're really really patient ;)).

        Cheers,
        Steven Schultz
