I had very strange problems with a nforce2-board (A7N8X) and an Athlon XP 2400+ too. See "Reliable and stable mobo-chipset for video-encoding" in this list starting on Aug, 2nd 2003. Since a short time I have a KT400_A_-Board (Epox EP-8K9A9+) with a VT8235CE Southbridge and it works, but there are some minor problems. Please note the Epox EP-8K9A7i (KT400A) has the same southbridge as the 8KRA2+ with a KT600 chipset and IMO the southbridge is important, if there are more a less problems with the kernel. I use SuSE 8.2 and the KT400A doesn't work fully with this distribution, esp. DMA and ACPI doesn't work and a default-kernel (not an Athlon-kernel!) is installed. So I had to compile a vanilla kernel 2.4.22. I used an ac-patch too, but I don't know if this patch is necessary for the KT400A. I had no time to try newer kernels and so I decided to boot with acpi = off. I read too, that the acpi problem should be solved with newer kernels than 2.4.22 and a patch. The newest test-kernel from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/RPM/k_athlon-2.4.21-82.i586.rpm should also be ok for the KT400A. I tested a little bit earlier version and acpi worked a lot better, but there were little acpi problems. Onboard-LAN and onboard-sound didn't work out of the box, but there is a big chance to get it work. Please note too, if you compile a vanilla-kernel you have to compile Alsa and there was a bug, if you use the ac-patch, but "./configure --with-cards" worked with my trident-card. I hope with 2.4.23-stable the problems would be solved.
