Well, since I've got this player, I've been putting many different video and 
audio file formats on CD to see what it can play, though I haven't done an 
extensive list of what does and doesn't work, yet (-;

Well, I'm not even sure what format will work with my system. ATM, the DVD is 
SCART'd to a switchbox, which has stereo audio outputs which I feed into the 
surround-sound stereo system, so I imagine it only plays Dolby encoded 
surround-sound as it stands. But I do have the digital optical connector 
available on the DVD player and stereo, just not sure what options that would 
open for me.

I was afraid of that. I suppose I could use MPlayer to convert the asf file 
into separate .wav files and then find out how to encode those for playing.
