lately its been cold. i dont think its gone above freezing for the past
week or two....

my car (92 16v gti--111k) seemed to be doing fine with the cold starts
(a few in the single digits), up until this weekend (and now every cold
start since).

i went to start my car (air temp read 2 degrees) and although it started
right up, i had zero revving capabilities. it idled as smooth as
always, but flooring it would do nothing. it felt alot like the timing
was WAAY retarded.

eventually i could get a little bit out of it, and once it warmed up,
everything worked okay. power still seemed to be down a *little*
(sometimes i feel a few very apparent flat spots) but thats not my main
concern. gas mileage seems to be poor as well...only around 22-24mpg
when it shouold be at 26-28. as a side note, the day i started at 2
degrees, my coolant was so cold and lost so much volume that it was
below the coolant sensor. (once it warmed up it was fine)

like i said, ive had this problem with every cold start (all below ~25
degrees) since. everything happens the same.

i looked at my bently, and im still pretty puzzled. the fact that it
goes away when the car is warm would seem suggest something with the
cold start system, but the fact that my car starts right up on the first
crank, and idles smooth makes me think otherwise. (could the temp
sensor be the culprit here?) perhaps the extreme cold is messing with
something mechanical, like the fuel plunger or something. i dunno.

one thing that might be of interest is the fact that i have (AFAIK) the
stock grounding cables. i actually have big 4 gauge cables from my old
car, but ive been too lazy to put them in. perhaps i should.

as usual, any/all input is appreciated.

thanks,
ben randolph
