Well, I thought I'd answer my own dumb questions, now that I've gone out and fixed my car tonight. (gotta love garages, even though it's only in the 40's here)

When I put everything back together, I didn't push the speaker wiring harness back in far enough. You really have to push it hard before it snaps all the way down. I just pulled the control unit wiring out, sprayed it with a little electrical contact cleaner and plugged and unplugged it a few times. Started working again.
