Team,
Any guesses as to a cause here??? I need to get this thing running fast,
my current situation with swing shift at the local casino combined with
SO's normal 7 to 5 hours at New Horizons and a 4 year old that goes to a
different New Horizons DOESN'T leave me with a whole lot of time to be
farting around with this. Due to SyncroBeast being tore apart ('89 Syncro
Vanagon) the 16v is the only running car I have, besides SO's '86 Scirocco
that she needs to use to get to work with at different hours than I do, but
that over ap by 3 hours!!!
Worst of it is I need the dang thing tomorro to try to get to a Job Fair in
down town Mpls!!
Dang, when it rains it poors.
HERE'S THE PROBLEM
1987 16v, stock, 1.8l, 166k miles.
distributor leaks some oil and has for quite a long while.
wire plug going in to distributor wiggle a little, but is not falling out.
It's cold outside, although only 20's, so not as cold as it could get.
Just ran though the car wash the other day at AMOCO. (I think FRIDAY?)
Symptoms are:
1. Crank and Crank and no sign of life at all.
2. Disconnect wire from coil to dist. I get a single spark (at a spark
plug plugged into coil lead) when key is first turned to run position, but
when in start position, NOTHING - no spark. (I also put key in run
position and used a screw driver across the starter - same result, no spark
at coil wire or #4 plug when cranking engine to start.
3. The other night, Thursday, I had difficulty starting, bucked and
snorted, till the engine warmed up a bit then ran and started fine. I
figured it was the thermo time switch or cold start valve, but now that I
see NO SPARK at the coil wire, I'd guess that's not it.
4. Saturday AM, Plugged in, started ok, I drove up to Maple Grove and sat
for 5 hours, and had some small difficulty starting and running. Bucking,
Snorting, dying, had to RESTART to get it to catch again, just fluttering
throttle did nothing.
