Hi everyone,

I recently joined this list and I think it's great! I have a whole slew
of questions, which I'll try to space out a bit. Here's the first one:

We bought a 1990.5 GLI early this year, which ended up needing more work
than I originally thought. One thing I really dislike is the poor MPG. It
gets about 24 hwy, and 20 city. Is this normal? It seems REALLY low to me.
The engine is stock, runs pretty strong, and I recently replaced the oxygen
sensor, catalytic converter (core busted), EGR amplifier, checked the EGR
valve, replaced front brakes (they're not dragging), and replaced cap,
rotor, & plugs (Bosch silver tip). No change, still 24h/20c. The only clues
I have is that some dark smoke is visible from the tailpipe under load
(acceleration). It's not a big cloud that's visible in the mirror, but a
car following can see it. The car consumes about 1qt of oil (Mobil-1
15W-50) every 1500 miles or so. I feed it Chevron premium, the California
special MTBE/oxygenated crap.

Any ideas on what's causing this? The plugs look OK, so I don't think it's
running insanely rich. But the cat was broken when we bought it, which
would back up the theory that it's running rich. Is there any sensor or
switch I should be investigating?

Thanks in advance! :-)
