Exactly.  The GTI 16V is good-looking, handles awesome, is very quick(for its 
class), carries FIVE people, is somewhat reliable, and gets good gas mileage. 
 It's practical, economical, and above all sporty.  But, like someone said 
earlier, it's about how the car makes you passionate about driving it.   The 
GTI has a bit of everything, and this certain "je ne sais quoi" (some call it 
Fahrvergnugen), that's why it kicks ass.

It's kinda lame to compare a GTI to a camaro or a corvette.  They weren't 
designed for the same purpose.
Lets try comparing the GTI to other cars in its class.  Most of us would end 
up on the same side.

About the cowl thing, I hate sitting in a mustang, or camaro.  You feel like 
you're in a bathtub, a bathtub with a V-8, but a bathtub nonetheless.
